Mission and Goals
MAP's Mission
Media Access Project (MAP), a non-profit, tax exempt, public interest telecommunications law firm, works to ensure that the electronic media and emerging technologies promote the first amendment goals of open civic discourse and a marketplace of ideas in order to safeguard democracy now and in the future. While technologies change, the importance of a well informed public and electorate does not.
MAP's Goals
- Promoting policies for deployment of the Internet and other advanced telecommunications networks, including cable, and direct broadcast satellites.
- Ensuring non-discrimination and open access for both users and speakers on broadband Internet facilities.
- Ensuring that broadcasters fulfill their legal obligation to promote civic discourse and democracy locally and nationally, as they convert to digital transmission.
- Working for the full implementation of the fairness doctrine and related policies ensuring access for divergent points of view and alternative artistic perspectives.
- Encouraging competition and content diversity in video services.
- Strengthening the enforcement of laws and FCC rules promoting minority and female ownership and employment in broadcasting, cable TV and telecommunications.
